HOW TO
CONSTRUCT A ROAD
There are
four stages to
consider when trying to
construct a road.
The stages are
as follows: (1) General (2)Demolition,site clearance and
earthworks ( 3)Construction of
culverts and Drains
and (4) Road pavement
/surfacing.
(1)General
The
client
Representative(consultant)
will be provided
with a well
furnish and maintain
office accommodation
as specified according
to schedule No.
IV.
The
consultant is also
provided with equipment,labour and
assistance as may
be
required in accordance
with schedule No IV.
Provide and
maintain living accommodation for
the client representative and resident
engineer to standards
specified in scheduled
No. IV.
Allow for
the provision of
the following : erection
of road signs,road
markings,compensation&acquisition
,progress
photographs,stationery and equipment,furniture for
consultant living room,payment
of wages to
casual staff of
the client
representative,purchase
-maintennance and running
cost of the
official transport vehicle
for the consultant,removal/relocation of
existing installation for
electricity,telephone and
water.Allow for planting
,nursing and growth
of beautification of
trees at road
side.Allow for laboratory equipment,provision of
personal computer,printers,video camera,software and
accessories. Allow for deep
soil
investigation.
(2)Demolition,site clearance
and earthwork
Clear site 15meter
wide on each
side of centerline
of road to
remove shrub grass
and trees including
topsoil to a
depth of 150mm. Excavate any
material except rock
and side drains,haul
excavated materials any
distance,deposit,spread in 150mm
layers and compact
to 100%B.S. Compaction
as filing for
embarkments and trim slopes to
requied cross-section.Excavate from
approved borrow pits,
haul excavated material
any distance, deposit
spread in 150mm
layers and compact
to 100%B.S Compaction
as filling for
embarkments and margins
formation and trim
slopes to reqDub in
grass to slope
of embarkment and
verges as specified
and directed .Excavate
unsuitable material as
directed by the
engineer and dispose
to spoil.provide approved
fill materials in
marshy and swanpy
areas as specified.Provide and
place 200mm thick
rip-rap protection to
embarkment slopes.
(3)culverts and
Drains
Demolish
existing bungalow building
where required and
dispose of all
materials as directed
by the engineers.Excavate for
all culverts concrete
side drains and
turnout to any
depth in any
material except rock
including backfilling to
100%B.S. Compaction and
dispose of surplus materials as
directed by the
engineer.Provide for and
construct 900mm diameter
concrete pipe culvert,complete with concrete blinding,bedding,haunching and
surround.Including
shuttering,headwalls,wingwalls
and aprons, all
complete.ageProvide for
, and construct grade
20 side drains
cross section 0.7mx0.9m
as specified in
the drawing.Provide and
place reinforced precast
concrete grade 30
drain slab covers

(4)Pavement and
